The present invention provides conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode materials comprising aligned CNT substrates coated with an electrically conducting polymer, and the fabrication of electrodes for use in high performance electrical energy storage devices. In particular, the present invention provides conductive CNTs electrode material whose electrical properties render them especially suitable for use in high efficiency rechargeable batteries. The present invention also provides methods for obtaining surface modified conductive CNT electrode materials comprising an array of individual linear, aligned CNTs having a uniform surface coating of an electrically conductive polymer such as polypyrrole, and their use in electrical energy storage devices.
An electrical energy storage device comprising:
A rechargeable battery comprising a conductive carbon nanotube electrode material wherein an electrically conducting polymer film is coated on a surface of an array of longitudinally aligned linear carbon nanotubules to form at least one bundle, the bundle comprising an aggregate of a plurality of individual nanotubules randomly aligned in a series of parallel planes and cohesively held together by the electrically conducting polymer resulting in multiple points of contact among the plurality of nanotubules establishing electrical continuity throughout a three-dimensional array within each bundle.
A high charge capacity electrical energy storage device for charging and discharging electrical energy comprising at least one aggregate of a porous conductive carbon nanotube electrode, wherein the porous conductive carbon nanotube electrode includes a plurality of randomly aligned carbon nanotubules cohesively held together with an electrically conducting organic or organic-metallic polymer film coating that uniformly coats a surface of the plurality of carbon nanotubules.
