## Abstract

The present invention involves intermediates, including a 7α-substituted steroid (II), and processes which are used to prepare eplerenone, a useful pharmaceutical agent.

A compound having the structure:
wherein Rb is selected from the group consisting of —H, C1-C4 alkyl, and phenyl optionally substituted with one or two C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkoxy.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The compound of claim 1 wherein Rb is C1-C4 alkyl.
