## Abstract

An integrated disposable cartridge for dialysis or ultrafiltration treatment of blood includes integral pressure sensors. Sensors are embedded in the blood filter on the cartridge to measure the pressure of blood or other fluids in the filter.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A filter for a blood circuit comprising:
a filter housing having a blood inlet and a blood outlet, and a filtrate outlet;
a filter medium in the filter housing and arranged between the blood inlet and blood outlet, and
a pressure sensor mounted to the filter housing and monitoring a pressure of blood in the filter housing, wherein the pressure sensor is embedded in the filter housing, and
wherein the blood outlet is connectable to a blood tube downstream of the filter.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A filter as in claim 1 wherein said filter is in a tubular cartridge housing of a blood circuit having opposite ends, the blood inlet is included in a first end cap attached to one of the opposite ends, the blood outlet is included in a second end cap attached to the second of the opposite ends, and the pressure sensor is attached to one of the end caps.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A filter as in claim 1 wherein said housing further comprises a tubular housing arranged vertically when filtering blood, and blood inlet is at a top end of the housing and the blood outlet is at a bottom of the housing, and said housing further comprises a filtrate output at a side of the housing.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A filter as in claim 1 wherein the filter is included with a disposable cartridge for mounting on a blood pump system, wherein the cartridge further comprises:
a. a blood passage for blood withdrawn from a blood vessel in a patient, wherein the blood inlet and blood outlet of the housing are included in the passage, and
b. the pressure sensor is an electronic pressure sensor, where the pressure sensor is arranged to sense a pressure in the blood flow through the filter and outputs an electrical signal indicative of the pressure.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

A filter and cartridge as in claim 4 wherein an electrical signal is a voltage level indicative of the pressure.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

A filter and cartridge as in claim 4, wherein a pump coupling loop of the blood passage are mounted on the cartridge and the cartridge detachably attaches to a pump console.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

A filter and cartridge as in claim 4 wherein the cartridge is disposed of after treatment of the patient.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

A filter as in claim 1 wherein the filter is of a group consisting of a hemodialyzer, hemofilter or hemoconcentrator.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

A filter in claim 1 where the pressure sensor is in fluid contact with the blood during filtration.

### Claim 10

A filter for a blood circuit comprising:
a filter housing having a blood inlet and a blood outlet, and a filtrate outlet;
a filter medium in the filter housing and arranged between the blood inlet and blood outlet, and
a first pressure sensor coupled to and extending through the filter housing and monitoring a pressure of blood in the housing, and
a second pressure sensor embedded in the filter housing and in fluid contact with a filtered fluid chamber of the filter housing.

### Claim 11

A filter for a blood circuit comprising:
a filter housing having a blood inlet and a blood outlet, and a filtrate outlet;
a filter medium in the filter housing and arranged between the blood inlet and blood outlet, and
a pressure sensor directly coupled to and directly attached to the filter housing and monitoring a pressure of blood in the housing, wherein the pressure sensor is sealed in a pressure sensor housing formed of a biocompatible and flexible material.

### Claim 12

A disposable extracorporeal blood circuit for processing blood from a mammal comprising:
a blood passage having a blood withdrawal port connectable to a vascular system of the mammal, a blood return port connectable to the vascular system and a blood passage between the withdrawal port and the return port through which blood flows;
a blood filter having a housing with a blood inlet and a blood outlet both coupled to said blood passage such that the blood flows through said filter, and
a liquid pressure sensor attached to and directly mounted on the filter housing and monitoring a blood pressure in the housing.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

A disposable extracorporeal blood circuit as in claim 12 wherein the monitored fluid is the blood flow through the filter.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

A disposable extracorporeal blood circuit as in claim 12 wherein the monitored fluid is a filtrate extracted by the filter from the blood.

### Claim 15

A method of monitoring a fluid pressure in a disposable extracorporeal blood circuit comprising:
withdrawing blood from a patient and into a blood passage of the blood circuit;
filtering the blood flowing through the circuit in a filter;
monitoring a pressure of the blood in the filter, as the blood passes through a housing for the filter by a pressure sensor at the filter and embedded in the housing of the filter, and
returning the filtered blood to the patient.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

A method as in claim 15 further comprising monitoring a pressure of filtrate removed from the blood by the filter using a second pressure sensor at the filter.

### Claim 17

A filter for a blood circuit comprising:
a filter housing having a blood inlet and a blood outlet, and a filtrate outlet;
a filter medium in the filter housing and arranged between the blood inlet and blood outlet, and
