## Abstract

A process for improving the sun protection factor (SPF) of cellulosic fibre materials and blends thereof, which comprises contacting said materials with at least one compound of the formula (1) in which M is hydrogen, an alkali metal atom, ammonium or a cation formed from an amine; R1 and R1′ independently of each other are —NH—R3, —N(R3)2 or —O—R3, wherein R3 is aryl substituted by —CO—X—R5, wherein X is O or NH and R5 is optionally substituted C1-C4-alkyl, R2 is a group of formula —O—R4 wherein R4 is hydroxy alkyl, alkoxy alkyl or hydroxy alkoxy alkyl, and R2′ has the meaning of R1 or R2.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for improving the sun protection factor (SPF) of cellulosic fibre materials and blends thereof, which comprises contacting said materials with at least one compound of the formula
in which M is hydrogen, an alkali metal atom, ammonium or a cation formed from an amine;
R1 and R1′ independently of each other are —NH—R3, wherein R3 is phenyl substituted by —CO—X—R5, wherein X is O or NH and R5 is 2-hydroxyethyl,
R2 is a group of formula —O—R4 wherein R4 is alkoxy alkyl or hydroxy alkoxy alkyl, and R2′ has the meaning of R1 or R2 and
additionally contacting said materials with at least one UV absorber selected from the group consisting of o-hydroxybenzophenone, o-hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole, 2-aryl-2H-benzotriazole, salicylic acid ester, substituted acrylonitrile, substituted acrylaminoethylene, nitrilohydrazone, o-hydroxyaryl-1,3,5-triazine, sulphonated 1,3,5-triazine and oxalic anilide UV absorbers and
where the SPF achieved is between 16.0 and 24.2.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1 wherein, in the compound of formula (1), R1 and R1′ are identical.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein, in the compound of formula (1), R2 and R2′ are identical.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein, in the compound of formula (1), R2 and R2′ are identical and are each —O—R4, wherein R4 is C1-C4-alkoxy-C1-C4-alkyl.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the fibre material is additionally contacted with at least one oxalic anilide UV absorber.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the amount of the compound of formula (1) used is from 0.001 to 2% by weight, based on the weight of the fibre material.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

A process according to claim 6, wherein the amount of the compound of formula (1) used is from 0.005 to 1% by weight, based on the weight of the fibre material.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

A process according to claim 6, wherein the amount of the compound of formula (1) used is from 0.01 to 0.5% by weight, based on the weight of the fibre material.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the cellulosic fibre materials used have a density of between 30 and 200 g/m2.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the cellulosic fibre materials used have a porosity of between 0.1 and 3%.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the cellulosic fibre material used is cotton or a cotton blend.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the cellulosic fibre materials used have a density of between 100 and 150 g/m2.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

A process according to claim 1, wherein the cellulosic fibre materials used have a porosity of between 0.1 and 1.5%.
