Abstract
A microelectronic programmable structure and methods of forming and programming the structure are disclosed. The programmable structure generally include an ion conductor and a plurality of electrodes. Electrical properties of the structure may be altered by applying a bias across the electrodes, and thus information may be stored using the structure.

A multi-cell programmable microelectronic device comprising:
- a first electrode of a first type;
- a second electrode of a second type;
- a first ion conductive material of a first resistance interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode;
- a third electrode of a first type;
- and
- a second ion conductive material of a second resistance interposed between the second electrode and the third electrode.

A multi-cell programmable microelectronic device comprising:
- a plurality of electrodes of a first type;
- a plurality of electrodes of a second type;
- and
- a plurality of ion conductor structures, wherein at least one of the plurality of ion conductor structures is interposed between one of the plurality of electrodes of a first type and one of the plurality of electrodes of a second type;
- and
- wherein a plurality of electrodes of a first type are electrically coupled together.
