Gaming device including a game having a player selected function based on symbols in a free spins game

A gaming device operable under control of a processor, said gaming device comprising:

• at least one display device operable with said processor and configured to display a game including:
• (i) a plurality of reels including a plurality of symbols, said symbols including a plurality of award symbols and at least one target symbol;
• (ii) a plurality of selections associated with the at least one target symbol, wherein a number of said selections are available to be picked by a player;
• and
• (iii) a plurality of game functions associated with the selections;
• and said processor operable to control a play of the game by:
• (a) providing a plurality of free spins of the reels to the player, and for each of said free spins:
• (i) causing a random generation of a plurality of said symbols,
• (ii) determining any awards associated with any award symbols generated on the reels,
• (iii) determining any generated target symbols, and
• (iv) causing a random selection of a number of said game functions by enabling the player to pick one of the available selections for each of said determined target symbols, wherein the number of available selections is determined independently of said determined target symbols;
• and
• (b) providing a total award to the player based on the determined awards and any selected game functions.

A method of operating a gaming device, said method comprising:

• (a) displaying a plurality of reels including a plurality of symbols, said symbols including a plurality of award symbols and at least one target symbol;
• (b) displaying a plurality of selections, wherein a number of said selections are available to be picked by a player;
• (c) providing a plurality of game functions including at least two different game functions, wherein each of said game functions is associated with at least one of the selections, and wherein each selection has at least one of said game functions associated with said selection;
• and
• (d) providing a plurality of free spins of the reels to the player, and for each of said provided free spins:
• (i) causing a random generation of a plurality of said symbols,
• (ii) determining any awards associated with any generated award symbols,
• (iii) determining any generated target symbols,
• (iv) enabling the player to pick one of the available selections for each of said determined target symbols, wherein the number of available selections is determined independently said determined target symbols,
• (v) determining any game functions associated with the picked selections, and
• (vi) providing a total award based on the determined award and any determined game functions associated with the picked selections.

A method of operating a gaming device, said method comprising:

• (a) displaying a plurality of reels including a plurality of symbols, said symbols including a plurality of award symbols and at least one target symbol;
• (b) displaying a plurality of selections, said selections associated with the at least one target symbol, wherein a number of said selections are available to be picked by a player;
• (c) associating a plurality of game functions with the selections;
• (d) providing a plurality of free spins of the reels to the player, and for each of said free spins:
• (i) causing a random generation of a plurality of said symbols,
• (ii) determining any awards associated with any award symbols generated on the reels,
• (iii) determining any generated target symbols, and
• (iv) causing a random selection of a number of said game functions by enabling the player to pick one of the available selections for each of said determined target symbols, wherein the number of available selections is determined independently of said determined target symbols;
• and
• (e) providing a total award to the player based on the determined awards and any selected game functions.
