Abstract
A transformerless power controller provides low standby power (milliwatts) for standby circuitry/logic of an appliance when the appliance is not in use. The power controller also provides gradations of power for the appliance based on need of the appliance and/or appliance component(s). In one form, a signal from a processor of the appliance provides control of the power controller. Particularly, a control signal from the processor operates a switch for the gradations of available power. The control signal may further provide timing for application of the power to the appliance and/or appliance component(s).
Claims16
A power controller for an appliance comprising:
- a first transformerless power circuit operative to produce a first power from the line power coupled to an appliance in which the first power circuit is housed;
- a second transformerless power circuit having a bank of capacitors, the second transformerless power circuit being operative to produce a second power from the line power;
- switching circuitry coupled to the bank of capacitors in the second transformerless power circuit, the switching circuitry being operative to discharge the bank of capacitors to supply said second power to power components in the appliance in accordance with a control signal.
A method of operating an appliance comprising the steps of:
- producing low power via a first transformerless power circuit from an input line power;
- and
- discharging a bank of capacitors coupled to the input line power in a second transformerless power circuit in accordance with a control signal to produce operating power for components in an appliance.
A power controller for an appliance comprising:
- a first transformerless power circuit operative to derive low power from an input line power and supply the low power to low power components of the appliance;
- a second transformerless power circuit having a bank of capacitors, the second transformerless power circuit being operative to derive operating power from the input line power;
- a switching circuit in communication with the bank of capacitors in said second transformerless power circuit and operative to discharge the bank of capacitors to supply said operating power to operating power components of the appliance in response to a control signal;
- and
- a control signal generator in communication with said switching circuit and operative to generate a control signal in response to a run mode signal.
