Abstract
The invention relates to a Reed-Solomon decoder and to a method of soft decision decoding of Reed-Solomon codes, wherein a syndrome polynomial, an erasure polynomial, and a modified syndrome polynomial are computed on-the-fly in parallel by iteratively updating coefficients of these polynomials.
Claims10
A method for soft-decision decoding of Reed-Solomon codewords consisting of N symbols, M of which are check symbols, comprising:
- computing a syndrome polynomial, an erasure polynomial, and a modified syndrome polynomial of a same one of the codewords in parallel by iteratively updating coefficients of the syndrome polynomial, the erasure polynomial, and the modified syndrome polynomial at each symbol clock when a new data symbol of the same one of the codewords is arriving, such that the syndrome polynomial, the erasure polynomial, and the modified syndrome polynomial for the same one of the codewords are obtained directly after the coefficient updating for the last symbol of the same one of the codewords has been performed.
A digital storage medium comprising:
- a program for soft-decision decoding of Reed-Solomon codewords, the program being adapted for computing a syndrome polynomial, an erasure polynomial, and a modified syndrome polynomial of a same one of the codewords in parallel by iteratively updating coefficients of the syndrome polynomial, the erasure polynomial, and the modified syndrome polynomial at each symbol clock when a new data symbol of the same one of the codewords is arriving, such that the syndrome polynomial, the erasure polynomial, and the modified syndrome polynomial for the same one of the codewords are obtained directly after the coefficient updating for the last symbol of the same one of the codewords has been performed.
An apparatus comprising:
- a Reed-Solomon codeword decoder configured for computation of a syndrome polynomial, an erasure polynomial, and a modified syndrome polynomial of a codeword in parallel by iteratively updating coefficients of the syndrome polynomial, the erasure polynomial and the modified syndrome polynomial of the codeword at each symbol clock when a new data symbol of the codeword is arriving, such that the syndrome polynomial, the erasure polynomial and the modified syndrome polynomial for the codeword are obtained directly after the coefficient updating for the last symbol of the codeword has been performed.
