Abstract
According to the invention, there is provided seed and plants of the corn variety designated I226218. The invention thus relates to the plants, seeds and tissue cultures of the variety I226218, and to methods for producing a corn plant produced by crossing a corn plant of variety I226218 with itself or with another corn plant, such as a plant of another variety. The invention further relates to corn seeds and plants produced by crossing plants of variety I226218 with plants of another variety, such as another inbred line. The invention further relates to the inbred and hybrid genetic complements of plants of variety I226218.
Claims24
A seed of the corn variety I226218, wherein a representative sample of seed of the variety has been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-7973.
A method of introducing a heritable trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified phytic acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and modified protein metabolism into corn variety I226218, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) crossing a plant of variety I226218, with another corn plant that heritably carries the trait to produce F1 progeny plants, at least some of which heritably carry the trait, wherein a representative sample of seed of variety I226218 have been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-7973;
- (b) selecting F1 progeny plants that heritably carry the trait;
- (c) crossing the selected progeny plants with another plant of variety I226218 to produce next-generation progeny plants at least some of which heritably carry the trait;
- (d) selecting next-generation progeny plants that heritably carry the trait and exhibit the morphological and physiological characteristics of variety I226218;
- and
- (e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times to produce selected progeny plants that comprise the trait and all of the morphological and physical characteristics of corn variety I226218 set forth in Table 1 as determined at the 5% significance level when grown under the same environmental conditions.
A method of introducing a heritable trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified phytic acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and modified protein metabolism into a plant of corn variety I226218, said method comprising introducing a transgene conferring the trait into the plant, wherein a representative sample of seed of variety I226218 has been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-7973.
A method of producing an inbred corn plant derived from the corn variety I226218, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) preparing a progeny plant derived from corn variety I226218 by crossing a plant of the corn variety I226218 with a second corn plant, wherein a sample of the seed of the corn variety I226218 was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-7973;
- (b) crossing the progeny plant with itself or a second plant to produce a seed of a progeny plant of a subsequent generation;
- (c) growing a progeny plant of a subsequent generation from said seed and crossing the progeny plant of a subsequent generation with itself or a second plant;
- and
- (d) repeating steps (b) and (c) for an addition 3-10 generations to produce an inbred corn plant derived from the corn variety I226218, tissue selected from the group consisting of leaf, pollen, embryo, root, root tip, anther, silk, flower, kernel, ear, cob, husk, stalk and meristem.
