This invention provides 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl compounds that are useful as intermediates for preparing glycopeptide antibiotics.

A compound of the formula:
- wherein
- A is —CH2— or —CH2CH2—;
- B is n-heptyl, n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl or n-undecyl;
- and
- Fmoc is 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl;
- or a trialkylammonium salt thereof.
