Abstract
The invention provides a nucleic acid molecule comprising at least a functional fragment of the viomycin biosynthetic gene cluster, functional proteins encoded by the cluster, expression cassettes and recombinant host cells comprising a functional fragment of the viomycin cluster, and methods for generating biologically active agents using the nucleic acid molecules of the present invention.
Claims47
An isolated and purified nucleic acid molecule comprising at least a functional fragment of a viomycin biosynthetic gene cluster that encodes a VioA gene product having at least 95% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:2, wherein the VioA gene product is a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase product capable of forming a peptide bond between a dipeptide that comprises L-2,3-diaminopropionate and L-serine and a second L-serine.
An isolated and purified polypeptide having the amino acid sequence of the VioA gene product set forth in SEQ ID NO:2.
