Abstract
Intramedullary guidance systems and methods introduce some and/or all surgical tools and ankle prostheses components through the tibia, using minimal invasive exposure in the tibia tubercle, or retrograde through the talus, using minimal invasive exposure in planar surface of the calcaneus. The systems and methods align the talus and tibia for the installation of one or more ankle prostheses components, and also maintain that alignment during the installation using intramedullary guidance, e.g., by use of a guide pin to form an intramedullar passage along which surgical tools and prosthetic components are guided.
Claims24
A method of installing an ankle prosthesis system comprising
- making an intramedullary passage into the tibial shaft retrograde through the calcaneus,
- passing a tibial stem component inferiorly through the intramedullary passage into the tibial shaft,
- fixing the tibial stem within the tibial shaft, and coupling an artificial tibial joint surface to the tibial stem component.
A prosthesis system comprising
- a first tool including a guide pin sized and configured to form an intramedullary passage retrograde through a calcaneus into a tibial shaft,
- an intramedullary reaming device sized and configured to be passed over the guide pin retrograde through the calcaneus to enlarge the intramedulary passage,
- a tibial stem sized and configured for inferior passage into the tibial shaft through the intramedullary passage formed by the first tool retrograde through the calcaneus into the tibial shaft and enlarged by the intramedullary reaming device,
- an artificial tibial joint surface sized and arranged to be coupled to the tibial stem, and
- an artificial talar joint surface adapted to be fixed to the talus for articulation with the artificial tibial joint surface.
A prosthesis system comprising
- a first tool including a guide pin sized and configured to form an intramedullary passage retrograde through a calcaneus into a tibial shaft,
- a cannulated drill sized and configured to be passed over the guide pin retrograde through the calcaneus to enlarge the intramedulary passage,
- a tibial stem sized and configured for inferior passage into the tibial shaft through the intramedullary passage formed by the first tool retrograde through the calcaneus into the tibial shaft and enlarged by the intramedullary reaming device,
- an artificial tibial joint surface sized and arranged to be coupled to the tibial stem, and
- an artificial talar joint surface adapted to be fixed to the talus for articulation with the artificial tibial joint surface.
A method of installing an ankle prosthesis system comprising
- forming an intramedullary passage retrograde through a calcaneus into a tibial shaft with a guide pin,
- enlarging the intramedulary passage using a second tool that is guided over the guide pin retrograde through the calcaneus,
- passing a tibial stem inferiorly into the tibial shaft through the intramedullary passage enlarged by the second tool, and
- coupling an artificial tibial joint surface to the tibial stem.
