Abstract
An electric arc welder for performing a pulse welding process by a current between an advancing electrode and workpiece where the welder comprises a short detecting circuit for creating a short signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between the advancing electrode and the workpiece and a boost circuit to create a plasma boost pulse after the short circuit is cleared during the time period when the welder is not outputting the peak pulse current.
Claims182
An electric arc welder for performing a pulse welding process by a voltage driven current between an advancing electrode and a workpiece, said pulse welding process including a series of successive waveforms each having a pulse defined by a peak current beginning when the electrode is separated from the workpiece and a background current portion, said welder having an output voltage and comprising:
- a short detecting circuit creating a short signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between said advancing electrode and said workpiece, a circuit for clearing the short circuit in response to the short signal, and a boost circuit to create a plasma boost pulse after the short circuit has been cleared.
A method of pulse welding by a series of pulses between an advancing electrode and a workpiece in a pulse welding process including a series of successive waveforms each having a pulse defined by a peak current beginning when the electrode is separated from the workpiece and a background current portion, said method comprising:
- (a) detecting a short circuit between said electrode and said workpiece;
- (b) clearing said short circuit;
- and,
- (c) creating a plasma boost pulse after said short circuit has been cleared.
An electric arc welder for performing a pulse welding process by a current between an advancing electrode and a workpiece, said pulse welding process including a series of successive waveforms each having a pulse defined by a peak current beginning when the electrode is separated from the workpiece and a background current portion, said welder having an output voltage and comprising:
- a short detecting circuit creating a short signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between said advancing electrode and said workpiece, a circuit to increase said current after said signal to clear said short circuit and wherein said electrode is a cored wire;
- further comprising a boost circuit to create a plasma boost pulse after the short circuit has been cleared.
An electric arc welder for performing a pulse welding process by a current between an advancing electrode and a workpiece, said pulse welding process including a series of successive waveforms each having a pulse defined by a peak current beginning when the electrode is separated from the workpiece and a background current portion, said welder comprising:
- a short detecting circuit creating a short signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between said advancing electrode and said workpiece, a circuit for clearing the short circuit in response to the short signal, and a boost circuit to create a plasma boost pulse after the short circuit has been cleared.
A method of welding by a series of pulses between an advancing electrode and a workpiece in a pulse welding process including a series of successive waveforms each having a pulse defined by a peak current beginning when the electrode is separated from the workpiece and a background current portion, said method comprising:
- (a) creating a short signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between said advancing electrode and said workpieces;
- (b) increasing current after said signal to clear said short circuit;
- and,
- (c) creating a plasma boost pulse between said electrode and said workpiece after said short circuit has been cleared.
- a short detecting circuit creating a short signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between said advancing electrode and said workpiece, a circuit to increase said current after said signal, and a boost circuit to create a plasma boost pulse after said short circuit has been cleared.
- a short detecting circuit creating a first signal upon occurrence of a short circuit between said advancing electrode and said workpiece and a second signal when said short is cleared, a circuit for clearing the short circuit in response to said first signal, and a boost circuit to create a plasma boost pulse after creation of said second signal.
