Abstract
An apparatus images a surface. An imager stage linearly translates the surface in a first direction. A light path has a first end defining an input aperture perpendicular to the first direction and parallel to the surface, and a second end defining an output aperture. A plurality of radiation beams linearly scan and interact in time-multiplexed alternating turns with the surface below the input aperture to produce a time-multiplexed light signal that is collected by the input aperture and transmitted by the light path to the output aperture. A photodetector arrangement detects the light signal at the output aperture. A processor processes the detected time-multiplexed light.
Claims17
A scanning imager for imaging a sample, the imager including:
- an imager stage that supports the sample;
- a light path having a proximate input aperture viewing the sample on the imager stage and a distal output aperture
- a plurality of scanning radiation sources, each arranged in a fixed relative position to the input aperture, groups of one or more of the scanning radiation sources, in alternating turns with the remaining scanning radiation sources, scanning a radiation beam on the sample within a viewing area of the input aperture, the radiation beam interacting with the sample to produce light signals that are received by the input aperture and transmitted via the light path to the output aperture;
- a rotating polygon scanner having two or more reflective surfaces, wherein the plurality of radiation sources is arranged so that each reflective surface scans, in alternating turn, radiation from at least two of the scanning radiation sources over a selected area of the sample, thereby increasing the number of scans for each revolution of the rotating polygon scanner;
- a photodetector system arranged to detect the light signals received from the output aperture respective to each group of the scanning radiation sources;
- and
- a processor that processes the light signal detected by the photodetector respective to each group of the scanning radiation sources.
A scanning imager for imaging a generally planar surface, the imager including:
- a linearly translating stage that linearly translates the surface in a first direction;
- a light path arranged to define a linear input aperture disposed perpendicular to the first direction and parallel to the surface, and a second end defining a generally circular output aperture;
- a plurality of scanning radiation sources, wherein groups comprising one or more of the scanning radiation sources, in time-multiplexed turn with the remaining scanning radiation sources, linearly scan a radiation beam along the generally planar surface below the input aperture, the radiation beam interacting with the surface to produce a light signal that is collected by the input aperture and transmitted by the light path to the output aperture;
- a polygon scanner having at least two reflective surfaces, arranged to cooperate with the plurality of scanning radiation sources, wherein each of the reflective surfaces scans the radiation beam from each of the groups of radiation sources in alternating turns;
- a photodetector system arranged detect the light signal at the generally circular output aperture respective to each group of the scanning radiation sources;
- and
- a rastering processor communicating with the imager stage and the plurality of scanning radiation sources to coordinate the scanning of the radiation beam and the linear translation of the surface to effectuate a rastering of the radiation beam on the surface.
An imaging method comprising:
- alternatingly reflecting radiation from a plurality of radiation beams off at least two surfaces of a rotating polygon scanner, thereby increasing the number of scans for each revolution of the rotating polygon scanner;
- sweeping each of the plurality of reflected radiation beams, each having varying radiation wavelengths along a linear path on a sample in time-multiplexed turns;
- collecting light produced by beam interaction of each of the radiation beams with the sample;
- transmitting the collected light along a light path, the light path channeling the collected light to a selected output region;
- detecting the collected light of each beam interaction at the selected output region respective to each radiation beam;
- moving the sample generally perpendicularly to the linear path of the plurality of radiation beams sweeping, the moving cooperating with the sweeping to raster the time-multiplexed radiation beams on the sample;
- and
- coordinating the sweeping, moving, and detecting to generate an array of picture elements representative of at least a portion of the sample for each of the beam interactions.
A scanning imager far imaging a sample, the imager including:
- an imager stage that supports the sample;
- a light path having a proximate input aperture viewing the sample on the imager stage and a distal output aperture;
- a plurality of scanning radiation sources, each arranged in a fixed relative position to the input aperture, groups of one or more of the scanning radiation sources, in alternating turns with the remaining scanning radiation sources, scanning a radiation beam on the sample within a viewing area of the input aperture, the radiation beam interacting with the sample to produce light signals that are received by the input aperture and transmitted via the light path to the output aperture;
- a rotating polygon scanner having two or more reflective surfaces, wherein the plurality of radiation sources is arranged so that each reflective surface scans, in alternating turn, radiation from at least two of the scanning radiation sources over a selected area of the sample, thereby increasing the number of scans for each revolution of the rotating polygon scanner;
- wherein a motor rotates the sample about an axis that is normal to a surface of the sample, the input aperture has a generally linear shape extending radially away from the rotational axis, and the plurality of scanning radiation sources scans the radiation beam along a beam trajectory parallel to the generally linear aperture;
- a photodetector system arranged to detect the light signals received from the output aperture respective to each group of the scanning radiation sources;
- and a processor that processes the light signal detected by the photodetector respective to each group of the scanning radiation sources.
