Abstract
A system and method for reading a magnetic medium having a data band thereon, the data band comprising a plurality of simultaneously written data tracks and at least one alignment band. The system in one embodiment includes a plurality of adjacent readers for simultaneously reading the data tracks. At least one reader is also present for reading the at least one alignment band. A mechanism determines a fractional overlap of each reader on the data tracks based on readback of the alignment band. A mechanism extracts data from readback of the data tracks based at least in part on the fractional overlap.
Claims18
A system for reading a magnetic medium having a data band thereon, the data band comprising a plurality of simultaneously written data tracks and at least one alignment band, the system comprising:
- a plurality of adjacent readers for simultaneously reading the data tracks and the at least one alignment band;
- a mechanism for determining a fractional overlap of each reader on the data tracks based on readback of the at least one alignment band;
- and
- a mechanism for extracting data from readback of the data tracks based at least in part on the fractional overlap,
- wherein the data is extracted from the reader signals using an inversion matrix.
A method for reading a magnetic medium having a data band thereon, the data band comprising a plurality of simultaneously written tracks, the tracks including data and an alignment signal, the method comprising:
- receiving signals from a plurality of adjacent readers simultaneously reading the data tracks;
- receiving a signal from at least one reader reading the alignment signal;
- determining a fractional overlap of each reader relative to the data tracks based on the signal from the reader reading the alignment signal;
- and
- extracting data from readback of the data tracks based at least in part on the fractional overlap,
- wherein the data is extracted from the reader signals using an inversion matrix.
A system as for reading a magnetic medium having a data band thereon, the data band comprising a plurality of simultaneously written data tracks and at least one alignment band, the system comprising:
- aplurality of adjacent readers for simultaneously reading the data tracks and at least one alignment band written simultaneonsly with the data tracks;
- a mechanism for determining a fractional overlap of the readers relative to the data tracks based on readback of the alignment band;
- a mechanism for extracting data from readback of the data tracks based at least in part on the fractional overlap,
- wherein the data is extracted from the reader signals using an inversion matrix.
A computer program product, comprising:
- a computer usable medium including computer usable program code for reading a magnetic medium having a data band thereon, said computer program product including:
- computer usable program code for receiving signals from a plurality of adjacent readers simultaneously reading data tracks of the data band;
- computer usable program code for receiving a signal from at least one reader reading an alignment signal of the data band;
- computer usable program code for determining a fractional overlap of each reader relative to the data tracks based on the signal from the reader reading the alignment signal;
- and
- computer usable program code for extracting data from readback of the data tracks based at least in part on the fractional overlap,
- wherein the data is extracted from the readback using an inversion matrix.
