Abstract
Dynamically detecting off-track errors in a disk drive by adjusting transducer head position control parameters in response to shock events. In an embodiment, shock events with large magnitude trigger a severe shock timer which lengthens the write fault before write operations resume. In another embodiment, a lower shock threshold is used following an initial shock event. In yet another embodiment, a lower shock threshold is used if an accumulated average position error of the transducer head is large.

A method for reducing the off-track position error of a transducer head in a disk drive, comprising:
- setting a first write fault threshold as an active write fault threshold;
- in response to detecting a first off-track event having a magnitude greater than the first write fault threshold, signaling a write fault and setting a second write fault threshold as the active write fault threshold for a predetermined time period that is independent of a position of the transducer head, wherein the first write fault threshold corresponds to a larger off-track event than the-second write fault threshold;
- and
- in response to detecting a second off-track event having a magnitude greater than the second write fault threshold and less than the first write fault threshold during the predetermined time period, signaling another write fault.
A disk drive, comprising:
- a base;
- a spindle motor;
- a disk;
- a transducer head;
- a voice coil motor interconnected to move the transducer head;
- and
- a controller, interconnected to the voice coil motor, for controlling a position of the transducer head, wherein the controller receives a position of the transducer head with respect to a track centerline of a track on the disk being followed by the transducer head, triggers a write fault and lowers a write fault threshold from a normal value to a smaller value for a predetermined time period that is independent of the position of the transducer head in response to a first off-track event of a first magnitude exceeding the write fault threshold at the normal value, triggers another write fault in response to a second off-track event of a second magnitude within the predetermined time period exceeding the write fault threshold at the smaller value, increases the write fault threshold from the smaller value to the normal value in response to the expiration of the predetermined time period, and does not trigger a write fault in response to a third off-track event of the second magnitude after the predetermined time period not exceeding the write fault threshold at the normal value, wherein the first magnitude is greater than the second magnitude.
A method of dynamically detecting shock events, comprising:
- activating a write fault and a hair trigger timer that runs for a time period that is independent of a position of a transducer head and replacing a normal shock threshold with a smaller shock threshold in response to a first shock event that is greater than the normal shock threshold, thereby increasing the shock sensitivity of the write fault;
- and
- replacing the smaller shock threshold with the normal shock threshold in response to the hair trigger timer no longer running as the time period expires, thereby decreasing the shock sensitivity of the write fault.
In a disk drive that includes a transducer head, a disk and a hair trigger timer, wherein the transducer head reads from and writes to the disk, the transducer head is prohibited from writing to the disk by a write fault, and the hair trigger timer runs for a time period that is independent of the position of the transducer head in response to being activated while not running and in response to being reset while running, a method of dynamically detecting shock events, comprising:
- activating the write fault and the hair trigger timer and replacing a normal shock threshold with a small shock threshold in response to a first shock event that is greater than the normal shock threshold, thereby increasing the shock sensitivity of the write fault;
- activating the write fault, resetting the hair trigger timer and continuing replacing the normal shock threshold with the small shock threshold in response to a second shock event that occurs during the time period based on the first shock event and is greater than the small shock threshold and less than the normal shock threshold;
- and
- replacing the small shock threshold with the normal shock threshold in response to the hair trigger timer no longer running as the time period based on the second shock event expires, thereby decreasing the shock sensitivity of the write fault.
In a disk drive that includes a transducer head, a disk and a hair trigger timer, wherein the transducer head reads from and writes to the disk, the transducer head is prohibited from writing to the disk by a write fault, and the hair trigger timer runs for a time period that is independent of the position of the transducer head and independent of shock events and is based on observed close temporal proximity of an initial shock event to subsequent small shock events in response to being activated while not running and in response to being reset while running, a method of dynamically detecting shock events, comprising:
- activating the write fault and the hair trigger timer and replacing a normal shock threshold with a small shock threshold in response to a first shock event that is greater than the normal shock threshold, thereby increasing the shock sensitivity of the write fault;
- activating the write fault, resetting the hair trigger timer and continuing replacing the normal shock threshold with the small shock threshold in response to a second shock event that occurs during the time period based on the first shock event and is greater than the small shock threshold and less than the normal shock threshold;
- replacing the small shock threshold with the normal shock threshold in response to the hair trigger timer no longer running as the time period based on the second shock event expires, thereby decreasing the shock sensitivity of the write fault;
- and
- excluding activating the write fault, excluding activating the hair trigger timer and excluding replacing the normal shock threshold hold with the small shock threshold in response to a third shock event that is greater than the small shock threshold and less than the normal shock threshold while the hair trigger timer is not running.
