Abstract
A cotton cultivar designated HAMMER is disclosed. The invention relates to the seeds of cotton cultivar HAMMER, to the plants and plant parts of cotton HAMMER and to methods for producing a cotton plant produced by crossing the cultivar HAMMER with itself or another cotton variety. The invention further relates to hybrid cotton seeds and plants produced by crossing the cultivar HAMMER with itself or with another cotton cultivar.

A seed of cotton cultivar designated HAMMER, representative seed of said cultivar having been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-8217.
A method of introducing a desired trait into cotton cultivar HAMMER wherein the method comprises:
- crossing HAMMER plants grown from HAMMER seed, representative seed of which has been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-8217, with plants of another cotton line that comprise a desired trait to produce progeny plants, wherein the desired trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance;
- selecting progeny plants that have the desired trait to produce selected progeny plants;
- crossing the selected progeny plants with the HAMMER plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- selecting for backcross progeny plants that have the desired frail and physiological and morphological characteristics of cotton cultivar HAMMER to produce selected backcross progeny plants;
- and
- repeating said crossing and selecting for backcross progeny plants steps at least three times in succession, or, when using molecular markers, repeating said crossing and selecting at least once and selfing said backcross progeny plants at least once, to produce respective selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants or second-selfed backcross progeny plants that comprise the desired trait and essentially all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of cotton cultivar HAMMER.
