Abstract
An oxapenem compound which is, or is capable of forming, a zwitterion of formula wherein R is a C1-C8 branched or straight chain alkyl group which is substituted by a protonated nitrogen base. The compounds find particular use as high bioavailability β-lactamase inhibitors.

An oxapenem compound represented by the formula:
- wherein R is —(CH2)n—NH3+ and n is 3-8.
An oxapenem compound represented by formula Ia or Ib:
- wherein R is a C1-C8 branched or straight chain alkyl group substituted with —NHCH:NH2+.
An oxapenem compound represented by formula Ia or Ib:
- wherein R is —(CH2)nNHCH:NH2+, and n is an integer from 1 to 8.
An oxapenem compound represented by formula Ia or Ib:
- wherein R is —(CH2)n—NH3+ and n is 4-8.
