Abstract
The present invention relates, in part, to a purified polyclonal or monoclonal antibody which recognizes an epitope of a protein of 48,000 dalton, where the protein recognizes is a surface protein of a merozoite of Plasmodium falciparum which has a peptide of SEQ ID NO:1 or a sequence wherein SEQ ID NO:1 has been modified by insertion, deletion or substitution and the sequence inhibits the binding of monoclonal antibody 245 to Plasmodium merozoites, as well as fragments of the antibody; the present invention relates to composition and kits containing the same, as well as methods of using the same.
Claims11
A method for treating Plasmodium falciparum infection in a mammal by passive immunotherapy, said method comprising administering to mammals in need of such treatment a composition comprising a polyclonal or monoclonal antibody, wherein said polyclonal or monoclonal antibody recognizes an epitope of a protein of 48,000 daltons determined by immunoblot, wherein said protein is a surface protein of a merozoite of Plasmodium falciparum which comprises the peptide of SEQ ID NO:
- 1 or a sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 1 which has been modified by insertion, deletion or substitution provided that said sequence inhibits the binding of monoclonal antibody 245 to Plasmodium merozoites.
A method for treating Plasmodium falciparum infection in a human by passive immunotherapy, said method comprising administering to humans in need of such treatment a composition comprising a polyclonal or monoclonal antibody, wherein said polyclonal or monoclonal antibody recognizes an epitope of a protein of 48,000 daltons determined by immunoblot, wherein said protein is a surface protein of a merozoite of Plasmodium falciparum which comprises the peptide of SEQ ID NO:
- 3 or a sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 3 which has been modified by insertion, deletion or substitution provided that said sequence inhibits the binding of monoclonal antibody 245 to Plasmodium merozoites.
