Abstract
The present invention relates to methods and instruments for placing a brace or connecting element into an animal subject for engagement with anchors secured in the animal subject. The installation instrument includes anchor extensions coupled to the anchors. The instrument is movable with respect to the anchors to position the connecting element in a position more proximate the anchors.
Claims52
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- making an incision in a patient;
- placing a first anchor through the incision;
- engaging the first anchor to a first bony element;
- placing a second anchor through the incision;
- engaging the second anchor to a second bony element;
- engaging first and second anchor extensions to respective ones of the first and second anchors with the first and second anchor extensions extending through the incision;
- and
- positioning a connecting element in the patient to a desired position relative to the first anchor and the second anchor through an entry location in the patient remote from the incision.
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- positioning through a single incision at least a pair of anchors within a body of a patient;
- providing a connecting element;
- referencing a position of the connecting element relative to a position of an extension extending proximally from at least one of the pair of anchors through the incision;
- and
- percutaneously inserting the connecting element into a desired position relative to the pair of anchors.
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- making an incision in a patient;
- placing an anchor through the incision, the anchor including a pivotal receiver member removably engageable with an anchor extension extending therefrom;
- engaging the first anchor to a bony element with the anchor extension extending through the incision;
- placing a second anchor through the incision;
- engaging the second anchor to a second bony element;
- and
- percutaneously positioning a connecting element in the patient to a desired position into the receiver member of the anchor and relative to the second anchor through the entry location in the patient remote from the incision.
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- making an incision in a patient;
- placing a retractor through the incision;
- placing a first anchor through the retractor;
- engaging the first anchor to a first bony element;
- placing a second anchor through the refractor with the refractor in the same incision as during placing the first anchor through the refractor;
- engaging the second anchor to a second bony element;
- percutaneously guiding a connecting element to a position relative to the first anchor and the second anchor;
- and
- securing the connecting element to the first anchor and to the second anchor.
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- making an incision in a patient;
- placing a first anchor through the incision;
- engaging the first anchor to a first bony element, the first anchor including a first anchor extension extending therefrom through the incision;
- placing a second anchor through the incision;
- engaging the second anchor to a second bony element, the second anchor including a second anchor extension extending therefrom through the incision;
- percutaneously guiding a connecting element to a position relative to the first anchor and the second anchor;
- and
- securing the connecting element to the first anchor and to the second anchor.
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- making an incision in a patient;
- positioning a first anchor with a first anchor extension through the incision;
- engaging the first anchor to a first bony element;
- positioning a second anchor with a second anchor extension through the incision;
- engaging the second anchor to a second bony element;
- referencing a connecting element to at least one of the anchor extensions;
- and
- percutaneously positioning the connecting element to the first anchor and the second anchor.
A minimally invasive surgical method, comprising:
- making an incision in a patient;
- positioning a first anchor with a first anchor extension through the incision;
- engaging the first anchor to a first bony element;
- positioning a second anchor with a second anchor extension through the incision;
- engaging the second anchor to a second bony element;
- referencing a connecting element to at least one of the anchor extensions;
- and
- percutaneously positioning the connecting element adjacent to the first anchor and the second anchor.
