Abstract
Vapor-emitting devices according to various embodiments of the invention include active end of use indicators to warn users that it is nearing the time and/or time to replace the vapor-emitting device or a refill for the device. Some embodiments of the vapor-emitting devices include intrusive actuation of the end of use indicator, while other embodiments include non-intrusive actuation of the end of use indicator. The indicators may be visual and/or auditory cues for notifying users it is nearing the time and/or time to replace the vapor-emitting device or a refill for the device.
Claims14
A vapor-emitting device comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a volatizable material;
- and
- an active end of use indicator in communication with said reservoir, wherein said active end of use indicator is configured to alert a user that said reservoir is at least one of substantially empty and includes an amount of volatizable material below a pre-determine level;
- said active end of use indicator comprising:

- a material associated with said completed circuit, wherein:
- said material is configured to swell when in contact with said volatizable material and to contract when not in contact with said volatizable material;
- said completed circuit is disrupted when said material is in a substantially swollen state and said completed circuit is not disrupted when said material is not in said substantially swollen state;
- and
- said active end of use indicator is configured to actuate when said completed circuit is not disrupted.
A vapor-emitting device comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a volatizable material;
- and
- an active end of use indicator in communication with said reservoir, wherein said active end of use indicator is configured to alert a user that said reservoir is at least one of substantially empty and includes an amount of volatizable material below a pre-determine level;
- said active end of use indicator comprising:
- a material coupled to a metal wire, wherein said material is buoyant in said volatizable material;
- a first electrode coupled to said metal wire;
- and
- a second electrode, wherein:
- said buoyant material is configured to contact said second electrode when said volatizable material is at least one of substantially evaporated and evaporated beyond a pre-determined level;
- a completed circuit is formed when said buoyant material contacts said second electrode, and
- said active end of use indicator is configured to actuate when said completed circuit is formed.
A vapor-emitting device comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a volatizable material;
- and
- an active end of use indicator in communication with said reservoir, wherein said active end of use indicator is configured to alert a user that said reservoir is at least one of substantially empty and includes an amount of volatizable material below a pre-determine level;
- said active end of use indicator comprising:
- a funnel located substantially within said reservoir;
- a first electrode located substantially at the focus of said funnel;
- a second electrode located substantially at the focus of said funnel;
- and
- a buoyant conductive material forming a shape located substantially in said funnel, wherein:
- said buoyant conductive material is configured to move within said funnel as a level of said volatizable material decreases;
- said buoyant conductive material includes a size such that when said volatizable material is at least one of substantially evaporated and evaporated beyond a pre-determined level said buoyant conductive material contacts both of said first electrode and said second electrode;
- and
- said active end of use indicator is configured to actuate when said buoyant conductive material contacts both said first electrode and said second electrode.
A vapor-emitting device comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a volatizable material;
- and
- an active end of use indicator in communication with said reservoir, wherein said active end of use indicator is configured to alert a user that said reservoir is at least one of substantially empty and includes an amount of volatizable material below a per-determine level;
- said active end of use indicator comprising:
- infrared light-emitting diode;
- said volatizable material comprising an infrared light absorbing material;
- and
- wherein:
- said infrared light-emitting diode is oriented such that infrared light emitted from said infrared light-emitting diode is directed toward said infrared photodiode;
- said volatizable material is oriented between said infrared light-emitting diode and said infrared photodiode such that infrared light emitted from said infrared light-emitting diode is absorbed by said volatizable material until said volatizable material is at least one of substantially evaporated and evaporated beyond a pre-determined level;
- and
- said active end of use indicator is configured to actuate when said infrared photodiode detects infrared light emitted from said infrared light-emitting diode.
A vapor-emitting device comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a volatizable material;
- and
- an active end of use indicator in communication with said reservoir, wherein said active end of use indicator is configured to alert a user that said reservoir is at least one of substantially empty and includes an amount of volatizable material below a pre-determine level;
- said active end of use indicator comprising:
- a funnel located substantially within said reservoir;
- a magnetic field sensor located substantially at the focus of said funnel;
- and
- a buoyant conductive material forming a shape located substantially in said funnel, wherein:
- said buoyant conductive material is configured to move within said funnel as a level of said volatizable material at least one of increases and decreases,
- said buoyant conductive material includes a size such that when said volatizable material is at least one of substantially evaporated and evaporated beyond a pre-determined level said buoyant conductive material is located such that said magnetic field sensor detects said buoyant conductive material;
- and
- said active end of use indicator is configured to actuate when said magnetic field sensor detects said buoyant conductive material.
A vapor-emitting device comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a volatizable material;
- and
- an active end of use indicator in communication with said reservoir, wherein said active end of use indicator is configured to alert a user that said reservoir is at least one of substantially empty and includes an amount of volatizable material below a pre-determine level;
