Abstract

For suture tying in a medical procedure including the use of an anchor that includes a suture locking device that includes a sliding pin guided by axial side slots formed in the locking device that forces the suture where the two ends thereof are inserted into the interior of the suture locking mechanism to drive the captured suture and pin to fit into a recess on the top of the suture locking mechanism such that the top of the pin binds the suture against the upper inner surface of the recess. The recess can be serrated to enhance the locking capability and the pin is polygonal shaped to provide side surfaces that run parallel to the wall of the recess to assure that the side portion of the pin does not fracture the suture and cause it to weaken. The locking of the suture is automatic upon the deployment of the anchor which actuates the pin into the locking position, thus eliminating the necessity of manually knotting the suture and improving the cinching of the tissue to the bone. The suture locking mechanism is usable for attaching tissue to the bone, tying tissue to tissue and the like. The disclosure also includes the method of deploying the combined anchor and suture locking device in a medical procedure.

Dependent claims

A suture locking device for securing and locking the ends of suture, the suture having two end portions defining a first reach and a second reach,

said suture locking device having a cylindrical shaped body having a wall defining a cavity, a top portion and a side portion,
a member extending axially in said cavity shaped body and movable in a uni-axial direction,
a pin laterally disposed in said cavity, said wall defining a recess formed in said body adjacent to the top portion and being in axial alignment with said pin, diametrically opposed openings formed in said side wall portion in said suture locking device for accepting said first reach and said second reach of said suture intended to be tied so that said first reach and said second reach extend laterally into and traverse said cavity to lie between said pin and said recess wall,
said pin being operatively connected to said member and being moved in an axial direction therewith so that said first reach and said second reach in said cavity being urged against said recess wall by said pin upon deployment of said suture locking device whereby said suture is locked in place owing to the squeezing force exerted on said first reach and said second reach by said pin against said recess wall.

A combined anchor and suture locking device for securing and locking the ends of suture, the suture locking device having a cylindrical shaped hollow body having a top portion, a bottom portion and a side portion,

said side portion having diametrically opposed slots formed therein,
a pin having ends being disposed in said body and said ends extending into said diametrically disposed slots, a pair of diametrically disposed apertures formed in said body at a location 90 degrees relative to said diametrically opposed slots,
a said top portion having an inner wall defining a recess formed in said body and being in axial alignment with said pin,
said suture locking device accepting portions of said suture that is threaded to tissue for tying the same by threading one portion of said suture extending from one portion of said tissue and another portion of said suture extending from another portion of said tissue threaded through said diametrically opposed apertures to overlie said pin,
said pin being translated into said recess upon deployment of the anchor causing said pin to translate in said diametrically opposed slots so as to force said portions of said suture to bind between the wall forming said recess and said pin,
whereby the squeezing of said suture portions between said recess wall and said pin locks said suture in place.

said suture locking device being affixed to an anchor of the type that is secured in said bone for medical purposes and including a cylindrical shaped hollow body having a top wall portion, a bottom wall portion and a side portion with diametrically opposed slots and diametrically disposed apertures circumferentially spaced from said diametrically opposed slots,
a polygonally shaped pin disposed in said body and having end portions extending into said diametrically disposed slots,
a pair of diametrically disposed apertures formed in the wall of said body at a location 90 degrees relative to said diametrically opposed slots,
a recess formed in said body having a serrated portion axially aligned with said pin,
a suture intended to be locked having suture portions for tying tissue to bone of a patient, wherein one portion of said suture extending from one side of said tissue and another portion of said suture extending from another side of said tissue and both portions being threaded through said diametrically opposed apertures to overlie said pin,
said pin being translated into said recess upon deployment of said anchor to force said suture to bind between said serrated portion of said recess and said pin,
said anchor having an annular bottom portion, an annular top portion, and wings mounted there between that flex outwardly,
an axial frangible shaft extending through said suture locking device and said anchor and having a pointed tip portion projecting beyond said bottom portion,
said pin extending through a hole formed in said axial frangible shaft and the ends of said pin projecting beyond said axial frangible shaft to engage said diametrically opposing slots,
said tip portion and said bottom portion advancing toward said upper portion when said anchor is deployed, and said shaft advancing above said top portion to expose an annular groove formed in said axial frangible shaft whereby said shaft portion above said top portion can be severed from said shaft portion below said top portion.

said polygonally shaped pin extending though a hole formed in said axial frangible shaft and the ends of said pin projecting beyond said axial frangible shaft to engage said diametrically opposing slots,
said tip portion and said bottom portion being advanced toward said upper portion when said anchor is deployed by operation of said tool wherein said shaft advances above said top portion to expose an annular groove formed in said axial frangible shaft whereby said shaft portion above said top portion can be severed from said shaft portion below said top portion.
