Abstract
A device, system and method for enhancing the functionality and efficiency of a chemical and/or enzymatic debriding agent with a physical debriding mechanism. The debriding agent alone and the physical mechanism alone are each capable of at least some debriding activity separately, without being used in the combination. In combination, however, they are more effective, such that the debriding efficacy is increased for the combination. Preferably, the physical debriding mechanism comprises an ultrasound source.
Claims36
A system for debridement of an area of eschar, comprising:
- (a) a device comprising an ultrasound source for delivering ultrasound radiation having a debriding effect on eschar, a spacer for maintaining the ultrasound source at a distance from the area of eschar and a container coupled to the ultrasound source, said container being adapted to be placed over the area of eschar, said container containing an acoustic medium for enabling the area of eschar to be exposed to ultrasonic radiation from said ultrasound source;
- and
- (b) a debriding composition for use in combination with said ultrasonic radiation and being in contact at least temporarily with said area of eschar, wherein the debriding composition comprises at least one enzymatic debriding agent.
A method for debridement of an area of dead skin tissue comprising:
- contacting the area of dead skin tissue with a debriding composition, the debriding composition comprising at least one enzymatic debriding agent;
- and
- applying ultrasonic radiation having a debriding effect on dead skin tissue to the area of dead skin tissue;
- wherein said contacting and said applying are performed in any order and said ultrasonic radiation enhances debridement of the dead skin tissue by the debriding composition.
A system for debridement of dead skin tissue, comprising:
- (a) a device comprising an ultrasound source for delivering ultrasound radiation having a debriding effect on dead skin tissue, a spacer for maintaining the ultrasound source at a distance from the area of dead skin tissue and an acoustic medium for enabling the area of dead skin tissue to be exposed to ultrasonic radiation from the ultrasound source, wherein said ultrasound source is placed in contact with said acoustic medium manually;
- and
- (b) a debriding composition for use in combination with said ultrasonic radiation and being in contact, at least temporarily, with the area of dead skin tissue, wherein the debriding composition comprises at least one enzymatic debriding agent.
