Abstract
A server computer receives back-up data from individual client computers and inserts them into a buffer within a shared memory area. The server associates an identification tag with each set of back-up data which identifies from which particular client computer the data was received. The server then multiplexes the back-up data and the identification tags onto a tape. Data from a particular client is de-multiplexed from the tape by scanning all of the identification tags on the tape and pulling off the tape any data which is associated with the identification tag corresponding to the particular client.
Claims48
A system comprising:
- a plurality of client computer systems;
- a server computer coupled to the plurality of client computer systems;
- and
- a storage unit comprising one or more storage devices coupled to the server computer;
- wherein the server computer includes:
- a memory comprising a plurality of buffers;
- a plurality of reading processes each configured to:
- receive a back-up data packet from a respective one of the plurality of client computer systems;
- create a client identification tag identifying the respective one of the plurality of client computer systems from which the back-up data packet is received;
- and
- store the client identification tag and the back-up data packet in an empty buffer of the plurality of buffers;
- and
- a writing process configured to:
- search for a full buffer of the plurality of buffers;
- and
- copy the full buffer to a storage device of the storage unit.
A method comprising:
- executing a plurality of reading processes each configured to:
- receive a back-up data packet from a respective one of a plurality of client computer systems;
- create a client identification tag identifying the respective one of the plurality of client computer systems from which the back-up data packet is received;
- and
- store the client identification tag and the back-up data packet in an empty buffer of a plurality of buffers within a memory;
- and
- executing a writing process configured to:
- search for a full buffer of the plurality of buffers;
- and
- copy the full buffer to a storage device of a storage unit.
A computer readable medium including program instructions, wherein the program instructions are executable by a processor to:
- execute a plurality of reading processes each configured to:
- receive a back-up data packet from a respective one of a plurality of client computer systems;
- create a client identification tag identifying the respective one of the plurality of client computer systems from which the back-up data packet is received;
- and
- store the client identification tag and the back-up data packet in an empty buffer of a plurality of buffers within a memory;
- and
- execute a writing process configured to:
- search for a full buffer of the plurality of buffers;
- and
- copy the full buffer to a storage device of a storage unit.
