Abstract
High power repeaters for use in amplifying optical data signals transmitted through undersea fiber optic cables are disclosed. Raman amplification schemes using 100 or more pump lasers are integrated into industry standard sized pressure vessels for amplifying optical data signals transmitted through one or more fiber optic pairs. Other repeater features include high density packaging, efficient power distribution, and component sharing.
Claims39
A high power repeater for use in an undersea optical communication system, said repeater comprising:
- a pressure vessel;
- a frame, disposed within said pressure vessel, for holding optical signal amplification circuitry and other circuitry;
- a dielectric liner disposed between said pressure vessel and said frame;
- wherein said repeater draws more than 250 watts to power said optical signal amplification circuitry and other circuitry.
