A method for preparing 3-(methylthio)propanal and 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanenitrile by catalyzed addition of methylmercaptan to acrolein and hydrogen cyanide to 3-(methylthio)propanal.

A method for preparing 3-(methylthio)propanal comprising reacting methylmercaptan with acrolein in the presence of a) a heterogeneous catalyst, and b) a reaction medium, wherein the heterogeneous catalyst is not soluble in the reaction medium.
A method for preparing 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanenitrile comprising reacting prussic acid with 3-(methylthio)propanal in the presence of a) a heterogeneous catalyst, and b) a reaction medium, wherein the heterogeneous catalyst is not soluble in the reaction medium.
