Abstract
Herein disclosed are nucleic acid sequences that can be used to detect fecal contamination in a sample. In one embodiment, the probes and primers disclosed herein can be used to identify the host species that is the source of fecal bacterial contamination in the sample.
Claims25
A method for detecting fecal contamination in a sample, comprising:
- contacting the sample with at least one nucleic acid molecule molecule consisting of at least 92% sequence identity to the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:
- 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14 and capable of binding to a nucleic acid sequence in a sample for detecting fecal contamination;
- and
- detecting binding of the nucleic acid molecule to the nucleic acid sequence in the sample, wherein a presence of binding is indicative of a presence of fecal contamination in the sample.
A nucleic acid molecule consisting of at least 92% sequence identity to the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:
- 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14, and capable of binding to the nucleic acid sequence in a sample for detecting fecal contamination.
A nucleic acid molecule consisting of at least 95% sequence identity to the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:
- 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14, and capable of binding to the nucleic acid sequence in the sample for detecting fecal contamination.
A nucleic acid molecule, wherein the nucleic acid molecule consists of the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:
- 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14.
A method for detecting fecal contamination in a sample, comprising:
- contacting the sample with at least one nucleic acid molecule consisting of at least 92% sequence identity to the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:
- 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14 and capable of binding to the nucleic acid sequence in the sample for detecting fecal contamination;
- and
- detecting binding of the nucleic acid molecule to a nucleic acid sequence in the sample, wherein a presence of binding is indicative of a presence of fecal contamination in the sample.
