Abstract
An organic-inorganic hydrophilic polymer-oxide hybrid proton conducting membrane (PCM) is produced from a host organic polymer, a filler inorganic oxide, and a proton-source with a pKa less than about 5. Usually, the subject invention comprises PCMs containing host polymer-x-strong acid-y-filler oxide, wherein x is between about 1 and about 10 (with “x” as the molar ratio of acid anion to polymer repeat unit) and y≦about 50% (with “y” the weight percentage of filler oxide in the composite).
Claims27
A proton conducting membrane (PCM) comprising a host polymer, a filler oxide, and a proton-source with a pKa less than about 5, wherein a molar ratio of proton-source anion to a polymer repeat unit in said host polymer is greater than about 1.
A proton conducting membrane (PCM) comprising a host polymer-x-acid-y-oxide, wherein x is between greater than about 1 and about 10, with “x” as the molar ratio of acid anion to a polymer repeat unit in said host polymer, and y≦about 50%, with “y” the weight percentage of oxide in the PCM.
A proton conducting membrane (PCM) comprising a polymer-x-H3PO4-y-SiO2, wherein x is between greater than about 1 and about 10, with “x” as the molar ratio of PO43− to a polymer repeat unit in said polymer, and y≦about 50%, with “y” the weight percentage of SiO2 in the PCM.
A proton conducting membrane (PCM) comprising poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)-x-H3PO4-y-SiO2, wherein x is between greater than about 1 and about 10, with “x” as the molar ratio of PO43− to a repeat unit in said PVP, and y≦about 50%, with “y” the weight percentage of SiO2 in the PCM.
A proton conducting membrane (PCM) comprising a host polymer-x-acid-y-oxide, wherein x is between greater than about 1 and about 8, with “x” as the molar ratio of acid anion to a polymer repeat unit in said host polymer, and y≦about 30%, with “y” the weight percentage of oxide in the PCM.
