Abstract
A method and system for control signaling in an open ring optical network includes transmitting traffic in an optical ring. At each of a plurality of nodes along the ring, local traffic is passively added to and passively dropped from the connected ring. At each node, an ingress optical supervisory channel (OSC) signal is dropped from the ring to a managing element. An egress OSC signal is added to the ring from the managing element. The OSC signals may be in-band signal or out-of-band signals.

A node for an open ring optical network, comprising;
- a transport element operable to drop an ingress optical supervisory channel (OSC) signal from a ring transport signal, to passively add local traffic to the ring transport signal, to passively drop local traffic from the ring transport signal and to add an egress OSC signal to the ring transport signal, the transport element comprising:
- a drop OSC filter operable to drop the ingress OSC signal from the ring transport signal;
- an add OSC filter operable to add the egress OSC signal to the ring transport signal;
- and
- a ring switch disposed between the drop and add OSC filters, the ring switch operable to selectively open the ring in the node;
- and
- a managing element operable to receive and process the ingress OSC signal and to generate the egress OSC signal, the managing element further operable to loop back an ingress OSC signal from one of the rings as an egress OSC signal on the other one of the rings.
An optical network, comprising:
- a plurality of nodes;
- a first ring and a second ring connecting the nodes, the first ring operable to transport traffic in a first direction and the second ring operable to transport traffic in a second, disparate direction;
- the nodes each including a first transport element coupled to the first ring, a second transport element coupled to the second ring and a managing element in communication with the first and second transport elements;
- the transport elements each operable to passively add local traffic to the coupled ring, to passively drop local traffic from the coupled ring, to drop an ingress optical supervisory channel (OSC) signal from a coupled ring and to add an egress OSC signal to the coupled ring, the transport elements each comprising a drop OSC filter operable to drop the ingress OSC signal from the coupled ring, an add OSC filter operable to add the egress OSC signal to the coupled ring, and a ring switch disposed between the drop OSC filter and the add OSC filter, the ring switch operable to selectively open the coupled ring in the node;
- and
- the managing element operable to receive and process the ingress OSC signal and to generate the egress OSC signal, the managing element further operable to loop back an ingress OSC signal from one of the rings as an egress OSC signal on the other one of the rings.
A method for control signaling in an open ring optical network, comprising:
- transmitting traffic in a first direction in an optical ring;
- transmitting traffic in a second direction in a second optical ring;

- at each of the nodes, dropping an ingress optical supervisory channel (OSC) signal from each of the rings to a managing element and adding an egress OSC signal from the managing element to each of the rings;
- selectively positioning a set of ring switches in each node to provide protection switching in response to an opening in at least one of the rings in a span of the open ring network;
- and
- looping back OSC traffic on each side of the span to allow each node to communicate OSC traffic with each other node in the open ring network.
