Abstract
Purified antiviral compounds, pharmaceutical formulations containing the compounds, and methods of use of the compounds are provided. The compositions of the invention are isolated antiviral components from plant extracts derived from, for example, Salvia miltiorrhiza, that find use in the treatment of viral infections, such as by inhibiting the activity of viral integrase. Methods for isolation and purification of the antiviral compounds are additionally provided.
Claims11
A method of treating a retrovirus in a population of cells infected with said retrovirus by reducing or inhibiting the activity of a retroviral integrase, comprising administering to the population of cells a therapeutically effective amount of a purified compound of Formula (1):
- wherein each R is independently H or an alkyl group and R1 is H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein said purified compound is administered in an amount sufficient to reduce the activity of said viral integrase, and wherein the population of cells are cultured in vitro.
