Abstract
The invention provides nucleotide sequences from coryneform bacteria which code for maltate dehydrogenase and a process for the fermentative preparation of amino acids using bacteria in which the mdhA gene is attenuated.

An isolated coryneform bacterium, which has been modified to express a decreased amount of malate dehydrogenase or to express a malate dehydrogenase with decreased activity compared to the corresponding unmodified strain,
