Abstract
A composition is for feeding aquacultural prey organisms such as Artemia and rotifiers, comprising a lipid component comprising at least 25 wt % of phospholipids and providing a DHA content of at least 30 wt %. The lipid component is preferably derived from marine organisms such as fishmeal, phytoplankton or zoo plankton biomass. The composition is used for providing prey organisms having a high content of highly-unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) suitable for aquaculture of fish including halibut, turbot, bass and crustaceans and molluses.
Claims34
A composition for feeding prey organisms for use in aquaculture, comprising 2–75 wt % of a marine organism lipid component comprising at least 25 wt % of phospholipids, and comprising about 5-about 99% of a further lipid component comprising tri- and-or diacylglycerides, and at least one additional component selected from the group consisting of an emulsifier, an immunostimulant, a vitamin, an antioxidant, a mineral, and arachidonic acid;
- the composition having a fatty acid composition characteristic of fish such that the composition provides a DHA content of at least 30 wt %, an EPA content in the range of 2–15%, and a content of n-3 HUFA, other than DHA and EPA, which include 18:3, 18:4, 20:4, and 22:5 fatty acids in the range of 2–25 wt %, the composition having a ratio of DHA to EPA which is at least 3 and a free fatty acid content of less than 10 wt %.
