Abstract
Compositions including alum and a smectite mineral material for the clarification of bodies of water by removal of dissolved solids, dissolved organic materials and other anions such as fluoride and chloride as well as the removal of total phosphorus from such bodies of water.
Claims44
A composition for treating phosphate in a body of water comprising:
- alum;
- a smectite mineral material;
- and
- an algaecide,
- wherein the composition, when added to the body of water, dissolves at a rate such that the composition retains about 90 percent of the integrity of its form for at least about 2 minutes;
- wherein the composition has a density sufficient to allow the composition to settle to a sediment water interface in the body of water the composition still retains about 90 percent of the integrity of its;
- wherein the composition dissolves and releases alum at the sediment water interface in the body of water;
- and
- wherein the composition is a time-release sorbent that sorbs phosphate from the body of water.

A composition for treating phosphate in a body of water comprising
- alum;
- a smectite mineral material;
- an algaecide;
- and
- a buffer;
- wherein the composition has a density in the range of from about 1.0 to about 2.0 gm/cm3;
- wherein the composition, when added to the body of water, retains about 90 percent of the integrity of its form for at least about 2 minutes;
- wherein the composition dissolves and releases alum at a sediment water interface in the body of water;
- and
- wherein the composition is a time-release sorbent that sorbs phosphate from the body of water.
7 more elements
A composition for treating phosphate in a body of water comprising:
- alum;
- a smectite mineral material;
- and
- an algaecide, wherein the algaecide comprises a chelated copper-based system comprising di-tallo di-bromo copper amine;
- wherein the composition dissolves and releases alum as the composition passes through the body of water;
- and
- wherein the composition is a time-release sorbent that sorbs phosphate from the body of water.
