Functionalized halogenated polymers for microencapsulation

A reactive protective colloid of Formula (III)

• wherein the open and not designated substituent positions on the main chain are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, fluoroalkylaryl, —COOR1, —CONR1R2, and substituted derivatives thereof, wherein R1 and
• R2 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, fluoroalkylaryl or fluorinated polyether;
• R′ is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, fluoroalkylaryl, —OR1, OCOR1, —COOR1, —CONR1R2, or a substituted derivative thereof, —Q—L— is a linking chain;
• A is a reactive functional group;
• m is ≧1.
• Z is oxygen, NR5, or N—L-(A)m, wherein L is a linking group,
• R5 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, fluoroalkylaryl, —COOR1, —CONR1R2 or a substituted derivative thereof;
• and
• d, e and f are the weight fractions of the corresponding repeating units with their sum no greater than 1.

A process for the preparation of a reactive protective colloid of Formula (I):

• R—(Q—L—(A)m)n (I)
• wherein:
• m and n are independently natural numbers which are ≧1;
• Q and L together is a linking chain;
• A is a reactive functional group;
• and
• R is a low molecular weight, polymeric or oligomeric chain or a halogenated derivative thereof, which process comprises reacting a compound represented by
• R—Xn (IV)
• with a compound represented by
• (Y—L—(A)m)n (V)
• in which R, L, A, m and n are as defined above, and X is a reactive group capable of reacting with a complementary reactive group Y to form a linking moiety Q.
