Abstract
A disk cartridge has a reflection portion to identify a kind of a disk in the disk cartridge. A disk drive apparatus has an optical detector to identify the kind of the disk by irradiating a beam to the reflection portion and detecting the reflected beam. The disk cartridge and the disk drive apparatus provide identification marks for identifying the kind of the disk by varying the angle and amount of a beam reflected from the reflection portions on the disk cartridge. Therefore, the kind of a disk and the type of a disk format are identified as well as the storage capacity of the disk.
Claims22
A disk cartridge for use with a disk as an information recording medium and which is received in a recording and/or reproducing apparatus having an optical detector, the disk cartridge comprising:
- a case which receives the disk;
- and
- a reflection portion disposed on the case and which reflects an incident beam to the optical detector to identify a disk type of the disk in the case according to a first characteristic of the reflected beam, the first characteristic further distinguishing the identified disk type from another disk type which is identified by the reflection beam received at the optical detector and having a second characteristic other than the first characteristic,
- wherein the reflection portion is arranged at one of a predetermined set of reflection angles relative to the incident beam to act as an ID mark so as to identify the disk type of the disk in the case.
A disk cartridge for use with a disk as an information recording medium and which is received in a recording and/or reproducing apparatus having an optical detector, the disk cartridge comprising:
- a case which receives the disk;
- and
- a reflection portion disposed on the case and which reflects an incident beam to the optical detector to identify a disk type of the disk in the case according to a characteristic of the reflected beam,
- wherein:
- the reflection portion reflects one of a predetermined set of different amounts of the reflected beam corresponding to the disk type of the disk to be received in the case,
- the one amount of the reflected beam creates a difference in the reflected beam, and
- the difference in the reflected beam is detected by the optical detector so as to identify the disk type wherein the reflection portion is arranged at one of a predetermined set of reflection angles relative to the incident beam to act as an ID mark so as to identify the disk type of the disk in the case.
A disk drive apparatus for use with a disk contained in a disk cartridge having a reflection portion, the apparatus comprising:
- a recording and/or reproducing unit to record and/or reproduce information with respect to the disk in the disk cartridge;
- and
- an optical detector to irradiate a beam to be reflected from the reflection portion, to detect a characteristic of the reflected beam, to compare the detected characteristic with a set of characteristics associated with corresponding different disk types, and to identify a disk type of the disk in the disk cartridge using the characteristic in the detected beam as distinguished from the another disk type having a different corresponding characteristic,
- wherein the reflection portion is arranged at one of a predetermined set of different reflection angles relative to the incident beam from the optical detector, to act as an ID mark such that the reflected beam can be compared to identify the disk type of the disk in the disk cartridge.
A device to identify a disk type of a disk in a disk cartridge comprising
- a reflection portion arranged on the disk cartridge to act as an ID mark to identify the disk type of the disk in the disk cartridge;
- and
- an optical detector arranged in a disk drive apparatus, which records and/or reproduces information with respect to the disk,
- wherein the optical detector irradiates a beam to be reflected from the reflection portion, detects a characteristic from the reflected beam, and identifies the disk type of the disk using the characteristic of the detected beam as distinguished from another disk type having another corresponding characteristic used to identify the another disk type,
- wherein the reflection portion is arranged at one of a predetermined set of different reflection angles relative to the incident beam irradiated from the optical detector, so that the characteristic from the reflected beam can be detected to identify the disk type of the disk in the disk cartridge.
