Abstract

A variant of a LAV virus, designated LAVELI and capable of causing AIDS. The cDNA and antigens of the LAVELI virus can be used for the diagnosis of AIDS and pre-AIDS.

Dependent claims

A purified HIV-1 virus,

wherein said virus encodes an HIV-1ELI variant Env protein containing the well-conserved stretches of OMP at amino acid positions 37–130, 211–289, and 488–530 of HIV-1ELI or HIV-1MAL shown in FIG. 3E.
