Abstract
Layered metal non-oxide coated substrates are disclosed comprising a three dimensional inorganic substrate having a coating of metal non-oxide derived from a pre-associated coating on at least a portion of all three dimensions thereof, produced by a unique process having particular applicability to the manufacture of metal boride, carbide and nitride coated three dimensional substrates. Certain novel coated substrates, such as flakes, spheres and porous substrate are disclosed. The coated substrates are useful in polymer catalysis, heating and shielding applications.

An article comprising a thermally associated nondeleterious contaminated metal non-oxide coated three dimensional powder particle substrate having an inner substrate core selected from the group consisting of a fiber, a flake, an irregularly shaped particle and mixtures thereof and a substantially uniform metal non-oxide coating having a thickness of from about 0.01 to about 0.75 microns thermally formed from a reactive metal containing precursor compound coating substantially uniformly preassociated with the powder, said metal non-oxide coating being chemically different from said precursor compound coating and core and on at least a part of said inner core, said metal and non-oxide being chemically different and said metal non-oxide coating being thermally formed from the precursor compound coating and thermally associated with the substrate core at the thermal conditions of the inner core external surface without essentially chemically altering the substrate core.
An article comprising a thermally associated nondeleterious contaminated metal carbide coated three dimensional powder particle substrate having an inner substrate core and the powder particle is selected from the group consisting of a fiber, a flake, an irregularly shaped particle and mixtures thereof and a substantially uniform metal carbide coating having a thickness of from about 0.01 to about 0.75 microns coating thermally formed from a reactive metal containing precursor compound coating substantially uniformly preassociated with the powder, said metal carbide coating being chemically different from said precursor compound coating and core and on at least a part of said inner core, said metal and carbide being chemically different and said metal carbide coating being thermally formed from the precursor compound coating and thermally associated with the substrate core at the thermal conditions of the inner core external surface without essentially chemically altering the substrate core.
An article comprising a thermally associated nondeleterious contaminated metal nitride coated three dimensional powder particle substrate having an inner substrate core and the powder particle is selected from the group consisting of a fiber, a flake, an irregularly shaped particle and mixtures thereof and a substantially uniform metal nitride coating having a thickness of from about 0.01 to about 0.75 microns coating thermally formed from a reactive metal containing precursor compound coating substantially uniformly preassociated with the powder, said metal nitride coating being chemically different from said precursor compound coating and core and on at least a part of said inner core, said metal and nitride being chemically different and said metal nitride coating being thermally formed from the precursor compound coating and thermally associated with the substrate core at the thermal conditions of the inner core external surface without essentially chemically altering the substrate core.
