Abstract
In order to increase the performance and reliability of devices including rotatable storage media, individual characteristics of device elements or heads can be determined and used to set performance criteria. The off-track capability and track mis-registration of an element or head can be determined and used to set individualized end-of-seek criteria for elements or heads of devices including rotatable storage media.
Claims44
A method of manufacturing a device including a rotatable storage medium, comprising:
- determining an off-track capability and a track mis-registration of an element of the device;
- determining an end-of-seek criteria using the off-track capability and/or the track mis-registration;
- and
- enabling a track-following operation when the end-of-seek criteria is met.
A method of manufacturing a device including a rotatable storage medium and at least one element, comprising:
- setting a predicted end-of-seek criteria for the at least one element;
- determining an off-track capability of the at least one element;
- selecting a first track mis-registration using the off-track capability;
- determining a second track mis-registration of the at least one element;
- comparing the first track mis-registration with the second track mis-registration;
- and
- modifying the end-of-seek criteria for the at least one element using the comparison of the first track mis-registration with the second track mis-registration.
A method of enabling a read by an element of a device including a rotatable storage medium, comprising:
- enabling a read by the element when an end-of-seek criteria is met, wherein the end-of-seek criteria is determined using an off-track capability and/or a track mis-registration of the element.
A method of enabling a write by an element of a device including a rotatable storage medium, comprising:
- enabling a write by the element when an end-of-seek criteria is met, wherein the end-of-seek criteria is determined using an off-track capability and/or a track mis-registration of the element.
A method of manufacturing a device including a rotatable storage medium, comprising:
- providing for the measurement of an off-track capability and a track mis-registration of the element;
- providing for the calculation of an end-of-seek criteria using the off-track capability and/or the track mis-registration;
- and
- providing for the enabling of a track-following operation when the end-of-seek criteria is met.
A method of enabling a read by an element of a device including a rotatable storage medium, comprising:
- measuring an off-track capability and a track mis-registration of the element;
- calculating an end-of-seek criteria using the off-track capability and/or the track mis-registration;
- and
- enabling a read when the end-of-seek criteria is met.
A method of self-testing a device including a rotatable storage medium having multiple tracks, comprising:
- determining an off-track capability of an element of the device by writing data to and reading data from at least one track of the medium;
- determining a track mis-registration of the element from a position error signal generated as the head moves along a selected track;
- determining an end-of-seek criteria using the off-track capability and/or the track mis-registration;
- and
- enabling a track following operation when the end-of-seek criteria is met.
A method of manufacturing a device including a rotatable storage medium, comprising:
- determining an off-track capability and a track mis-registration of an element of the device;
- determining an end-of-seek criteria using the off-track capability and/or the track mis-registration;
- and
- enabling at least one of a read operation and a write operation when the end-of-seek criteria is met.
