Abstract
Described is a packaging material which contains a matrix material coated with a thermoplastic polymer and an effective absorbing amount of a cyclodextrin material. The cyclodextrin material is selected from the group consisting of an α-cyclodextrin, a β-cyclodextrin, a γ-cyclodextrin or mixtures thereof. The packing material can act as a barrier with respect to permeants, such as water vapor, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, monomer compositions and residues, off odors, off flavors, perfumes, smoke, pesticides, toxic materials, etc. The barrier properties of the cyclodextrin material may be altered by modifying the moisture content of the cyclodextrin material prior to incorporating into the matrix material.
Claims38
A packaging material having improved barrier properties, the packaging material comprising:
- (a) a matrix material;
- and
- (b) an effective absorbing amount of a cyclodextrin material;
- wherein the cyclodextrin material is uniformly dispersed in the matrix material;
- wherein the cyclodextrin material is free of an inclusion complex compound;
- wherein the cyclodextrin material comprises at least one element selected from the group consisting of α-cyclodextrin, β-cyclodextrin and γ-cyclodextrin each having pendant moieties or substituents that render the cyclodextrin compatible with the matrix material;
- and wherein the cyclodextrin material has a moisture content of more than 0.3 wt.-% based on the cyclodextrin material.
A method for manufacturing a packaging material comprising the steps of:
- providing a matrix material;
- and
- dispersing a cyclodextrin material having a moisture content of more than 0.3 wt.-%, based on the cyclodextrin material in the matrix material.
A packaging material having improved barrier properties and a reduced content of volatile impurities, the material comprising:
- (a) a matrix material;
- and
- (b) an effective absorbing amount of a cyclodextrin material;
- wherein the cyclodextrin material is uniformly dispersed in the matrix material;
- wherein the cyclodextrin material is free of an inclusion complex compound;
- wherein the cyclodextrin material comprises at least one element selected from the group consisting of α-cyclodextrin, β-cyclodextrin and γ-cyclodextrin each having pendant moieties or substituents that render the cyclodextrin compatible with the matrix material;
- and wherein the cyclodextrin material has a moisture content of about 0 wt.-% based on the cyclodextrin material.
A method for manufacturing a packaging material comprising the steps of:
- providing a matrix material;
- and
- dispersing a cyclodextrin material having a moisture content of about 0 wt.-%, based on the cyclodextrin material in the matrix material.
