Abstract
A space-time signal processing system with advantageously reduced complexity. The system may take advantage of multiple transmitter antenna elements and/or multiple receiver antenna element or multiple polarizations of a single transmitter antenna element and/or single receiver antenna element. The system is not restricted to wireless contexts and may exploit any channel having multiple inputs or multiple outputs and certain other characteristics. Multi-path effects in a transmission medium cause a multiplicative increase in capacity.
Claims21
A method for transmitting into a channel via a plurality of antenna elements, said method comprising:
- for each of a plurality of orthogonal frequency subchannels, establishing a plurality of spatial subchannels for communication from a transmitter to a receiver, each spatial subchannel defined by one or more weights among said plurality of antenna elements;
- for at least one of said orthogonal frequency subchannels, distributing information among said plurality of spatial subchannels in accordance with spatial subchannel quality;
- and
- for said at least one of said orthogonal frequency subchannels, transmitting said information via said plurality of spatial subchannels by employing said plurality of antenna elements.
A method for receiving from a channel via a plurality of antenna elements, said method comprising:
- receiving signals via said plurality of antenna elements;
- frequency domain processing the received signals to recover orthogonal frequency subchannel information;
- spatially processing said orthogonal frequency subchannel information to separate received information into a plurality of spatial subchannels, each spatial subchannel defined by one or more weights among said plurality of antenna elements;
- and
- decoding said received information in accordance with an encoding scheme that is optimized to take advantage of multiple spatial subchannels.
Apparatus for receiving from a channel via a plurality of antenna elements, said apparatus comprising:
- a demodulation and RF system that receives signals via said plurality of antenna elements;
- a frequency domain processor that recovers orthogonal frequency subchannel information from said signals;
- a spatial processor that processes said orthogonal frequency subchannel information to separate received information into a plurality of spatial subchannels, each spatial subchannel defined by one or more weights among said plurality of antenna elements;
- and
- a decoder that decodes said received information in accordance with an encoding scheme that is optimized to take advantage of multiple spatial subchannels.
Apparatus for receiving from a channel via a plurality of antenna elements, said apparatus comprising:
- means for receiving signals via said plurality of antenna elements;
- means for frequency domain processing the received signals to recover orthogonal frequency subchannel information;
- means for spatially processing said orthogonal frequency subchannel information to separate received information into a plurality of spatial subchannels, each spatial subchannel defined by one or more weights among said plurality of antenna elements;
- and
- means for decoding said received information in accordance with an encoding scheme that is optimized to take advantage of multiple spatial subchannels.
