Abstract
An impact-absorbing shock module comprises two pylons telescopingly engaged to permit axial and rotational motion therebetween. A resilient element, such as a spring-fluid combination, a plurality of interconnected disks, or a Belleville spring, provides axial shock absorption. A tubular torque-resisting cuff provides rotational resistance, or torsion-resistance. A fluid valve is optionally provided so that the fluid pressure may be varied to adjust the torsion resistance.
Claims54
A device configured for connecting a stump socket to a prosthetic foot, comprising:
- an upper rotatable member having an outer surface and a first longitudinal axis;
- a lower rotatable member having an outer surface and a second longitudinal axis coincident with the first longitudinal axis, the upper and lower rotatable members being rotatable with respect to one another about their longitudinal axes, and translatable with respect to one another along their longitudinal axes;
- a resilient member disposed between the upper and lower rotatable members for resisting relative axial motion of the upper and lower rotatable members, and absorbing shocks that occur as a result of such relative axial motion;
- and
- a tubular cuff secured at an upper end thereof to the outer surface of the upper rotatable member, and secured at a lower end thereof to the outer surface of the lower rotatable member;
- wherein
- the cuff resists relative rotation of the upper and lower rotatable members;
- and
- the maximum relative axial displacement of the upper and lower rotatable members is about one inch.
A device configured for connecting a stump socket to a prosthetic foot, comprising:
- an upper rotatable member having an outer surface and a first longitudinal axis;
- a lower rotatable member having an outer surface and a second longitudinal axis coincident with the first longitudinal axis, the lower rotatable member being spaced from the upper rotatable member along their longitudinal axes, the upper and lower rotatable members being translatable with respect to one another along their longitudinal axes, and rotatable with respect to one another about their longitudinal axes;
- a guide member extending from an interior portion of the upper rotatable member into an interior portion of the lower rotatable member, the guide member maintaining the longitudinal axes of the upper and lower rotatable members in a generally colinear alignment;
- a resilient member disposed between the upper and lower rotatable members for resisting relative axial motion of the upper and lower rotatable members, and absorbing shocks that occur as a result of such relative axial motion;
- and
- a tubular cuff secured at an upper end thereof to the outer surface of the upper rotatable member, and secured at a lower end thereof to the outer surface of the lower rotatable member;
- wherein
- the cuff resists relative rotation of the upper and lower rotatable members;
- and
- the upper and lower rotatable members are translatable with respect to one another a sufficient distance to allow the resilient member to absorb axial shocks that occur as a wearer of the device walks about.

- and
- a tubular cuff secured at an upper end thereof to the outer surface of the upper rotatable member at a lower end thereof, and secured at a lower end thereof to the outer surface of the lower rotatable member at an upper end thereof;
- wherein
- the cuff resists relative rotation of the upper and lower rotatable members;
- the cuff is attached to the rotatable members such that the cuff encloses a space between the rotatable members, thus preventing atmospheric particles from entering the space;
- and
- the upper and lower rotatable members are translatable with respect to one another a sufficient distance to allow the resilient member to absorb axial shocks that occur as a wearer of the device walks about.
