Abstract
Automated systems and method for processing blood and other fluids are disclosed. The systems and methods utilize a disposable fluid circuit selected from one of two or more circuits. The circuits are mounted on a re-usable hardware component or module. The system includes a programmable controller including programs for use with the fluid circuits.
Claims39
An automated system for processing fluids from a human subject comprising a reusable module adapted to cooperatively receive a disposable fluid circuit for carrying out a selected procedure, including:
- (a) said reusable module including:
- (1) means for effecting separation of whole blood into two or more components;
- and
- (2) a programmable controller and a computer readable medium including preprogrammed instructions for:
- (i) carrying out a procedure comprising withdrawing whole blood from the vascular system of said human subject, separating said whole blood into two or more components, collecting a separated blood component having at least one known biological function, determining the amount of replacement fluid capable of providing said biological function to be infused to said subject, reinfusing said replacement fluid to said subject, and
- (ii) carrying out a procedure comprising withdrawing extra-vascular, shed blood from said human subject, separating said blood into two or more components, infusing a separated blood component to said subject;
- (b) said disposable fluid circuit comprising a flow control cassette having pre-formed flow path segments therein separated by valve stations for controlling fluid communication between said flow path segments.
An automated system for processing fluids from a human subject comprising a reusable module adapted to cooperatively receive a disposable fluid circuit for carrying out a selected procedure,
- (a) said re-usable module including:
- (1) means for effecting separation of whole blood into two or more components;
- and
- (2) a programmable controller and a computer readable medium including preprogrammed instructions for:
- (i) carrying out a procedure comprising withdrawing whole blood from the vascular system of said human subject, separating said whole blood into two or more components, collecting a separated blood component having at least one known biological function, determining the amount of replacement fluid capable of providing said biological function to be infused to said subject, reinfusing a replacement fluid to the human subject, wherein said replacement fluid provides said biological function;
- and
- (ii) carrying out a procedure comprising withdrawing whole blood from the vascular system of said subject, separating said blood into two or more components, determining the amount of a treating agent to be combined with a separated component, combining at least one of said separated components with a treating agent;
- (b) said disposable fluid circuit comprising a flow control cassette having pre-formed flow path segments therein separated by valve stations for controlling fluid communication between said flow path segments.

- (ii) carrying out a procedure comprising withdrawing whole blood from the vascular system of said subject, separating said blood into two or more components, determining the amount of a treating agent to be combined with a separated component, combining at least one of said separated components with a treating agent;
- (b) said disposable fluid circuit comprising a flow control cassette having pre-formed flow path segments therein separated by valve stations for controlling fluid communication between said flow path segments.
