A solid structure includes a substrate and a layer located on a surface of the substrate. The layer includes crystalline or polycrystalline MgB2.

A process for making a structure, comprising:
- providing a solid body comprising MgB2;
- ejecting MgB2 from the body by directing laser light onto the body;
- and
- growing an MgB2 layer on a surface of a substrate with a portion of the ejected MgB2.
