The invention provides polynucleotides for expression of genes in suspensor cells in plants and methods for using such polynucleotides.

An isolated promoter polynucleotide which specifically initiates transcription in a plant suspensor cell and/or basal region of a plant embryo, the promoter polynucleotide comprising a promoter control element comprising nucleotides 3329-3475 of SEQ ID NO:1 (nucleotides −913 to −767 displayed in FIG. 2).
