Abstract
There is provided a white light illumination system. The illumination system includes a radiation source which emits either ultra-violet (UV) or x-ray radiation. The illumination system also includes a luminescent material which absorbs the UV or x-ray radiation and emits the white light. The luminescent material has composition A2−2xNa1+xExD2V3O12. A may be calcium, barium, strontium, or combinations of these three elements. E may be europium, dysprosium, samarium, thulium, or erbium, or combinations thereof. D may be magnesium or zinc, or combinations thereof. The value of x ranges from 0.01 to 0.3, inclusive.
Claims26
A method for converting UV radiation to white light comprising:
- directing the UV exciting radiation from a laser or a light emitting diode radiation source to a single luminescent material;
- and
- emitting white light from the single luminescent material.
A system comprising:
- a radiation source which emits ultra-violet (UV) or x-ray radiation;
- and
- a single luminescent material comprising a host structure and an activator, wherein the host structure is adapted to absorb the UV or x-ray radiation from the radiation source and emit a first band of radiation having a first peak wavelength, and the activator is adapted to emit a second band of radiation having a second peak wavelength different than the first peak wavelength, such that an emission of the single luminescent material appears as white light.
An illumination system comprising:
- a laser or a light emitting diode radiation source which directs UV exciting radiation to a luminescent material;
- and
- a single first luminescent material itself emits white light in response to the UV exciting radiation.
