Abstract
Intermediates such as methyl 2,2-dimethyl-5-ethenyl-1,3-dioxane-5-carbonate useful to prepare antiviral compounds such as penciclovir and famciclovir are disclosed.

A compound of formula (Ill):
- wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of C1-6alkyl- or aryl carbonates. C1-6acyloxy and C1-6alkylphosphates;
- and R1 and R2 are joined together to form a moiety of the formula
- wherein R3 or R4 are selected independently from H, C1-12 alkyl and aryl.
A compound which is methyl 2,2-dimethyl-5-ethenyl-1,3-dioxane-5-carbonate.
