A fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, comprising:
- a core extending along the waveguide axis comprising a non-linear material and a first dielectric material having a refractive index n1;
- and
- a cladding extending along the waveguide axis and surrounding the core, the cladding comprising a non-chalcogenide glass having a refractive index n2<n1;
- wherein the fiber waveguide has a numerical aperture greater than 0.7.
A fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, comprising:
- a core extending along the waveguide axis comprising a first dielectric material having a refractive index n1;
- and a cladding extending along the waveguide axis and surrounding the core, the cladding comprising a second dielectric material having a refractive index n2<n1;
- wherein the fiber waveguide has a numerical aperture greater than 0.7 and for at least one wavelength the fiber has a mode field diameter less than 3 microns.
A fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, comprising:
- a core extending along the waveguide axis comprising a first dielectric material having a refractive index n1;
- a cladding extending along the waveguide axis and surrounding the core, the cladding comprising a second dielectric material having a refractive index n2<n1;
- and
- a dispersion tailoring region extending along the waveguide axis, wherein during operation the core supports at least one mode in a range of frequencies and the dispersion tailoring region introduces one or more additional modes in the first range of frequencies that interact with the guided mode to produce a working mode;
- wherein the fiber waveguide has a numerical aperture greater than 0.7.
A fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, comprising:
- a core extending alone the waveguide axis comprising a first dielectric material having a refractive index n1;
- and
- a cladding extending along the waveguide axis and surrounding the core, the cladding comprising a second dielectric material having a refractive index n2<n1;
- wherein the fiber waveguide has a numerical aperture greater than 0.7 and the core has a diameter less than 2 microns.
A fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, comprising:
- a first portion extending along the waveguide axis comprising a first material having a refractive index n1 and a melting temperature, Tm;
- and
- a second portion extending along the waveguide axis and surrounding the first portion comprising a second material having a refractive index n2 and a working temperature, Tw;
- wherein |n1−n2|≧0.35 and Tm>Tw.
A method, comprising:
- providing a fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, wherein the fiber waveguide includes a first portion extending along the waveguide axis having a refractive index n1, and a second portion extending along the waveguide axis having a refractive index n2, wherein |n1−n2|≧0.35, and
- directing an input signal into the fiber waveguide with an input signal power sufficient to cause the fiber waveguide to produce an output signal whose output signal power varies nonlinearly with respect to the input signal power.
