Abstract
The present invention guarantees that voice data (and other information types) will switch within a predetermined time period. Systems and methods consistent with the present invention accomplish this guarantee by, among other things, establishing permanent virtual paths between each network element, guaranteeing each voice line a slot in a packet in each frame, employing both octet switching and packet switching, synchronizing the operation of the network elements to a reference clock, and providing several levels of network redundancy.

A method for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data from a plurality of ports into packets, comprising:
- receiving TDM data from at least some, but not all, of a plurality of devices each uniquely coupled to one of the plurality of ports;
- writing received TDM data from each port into a packet slot preassigned to the corresponding port;
- and
- maintaining the availability of each preassigned slot for TDM data from the corresponding port regardless of the presence of TDM data on the port.
A method for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data into packets, comprising:
- receiving TDM data from at least some, but not all, of a plurality of devices each uniquely coupled to one of a plurality of ports;
- and
- writing the TDM data from each port into a packet and a packet slot permanently assigned to the port.
A system for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data from a plurality of ports into packets, comprising:
- means for receiving TDM data from at least some, but not all, of a plurality of devices each uniquely coupled to one of the plurality of ports;
- means for writing TDM data from a first port into a first packet slot assigned to the first port;
- and
- means for maintaining the availability of the first slot for TDM data received from the first port regardless of the presence of TDM data on the first port.
A method for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data from a plurality of ports into packets, comprising:
- receiving TDM data from the plurality of ports;
- writing TDM data from each port into a packet slot preassigned to the corresponding port;
- maintaining the availability of each preassigned slot for TDM data from the corresponding port regardless of the presence of TDM data on the port;
- if necessary, moving TDM data from a packet slot preassigned to a corresponding source port to a packet slot preassigned to a corresponding destination port;
- and
- writing TDM data from each preassigned packet slot to a corresponding destination port.
A system for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data from a plurality of ports into packets, comprising:
- a first interface to receive TDM data from the plurality of ports, the first interface including a state machine to write the TDM data from each port into a packet slot preassigned to the port,
- wherein the preassigned slots are maintained available for TDM data received from the corresponding port regardless of the presence of TDM data on the corresponding port,
- wherein the first interface receives TDM data from at least some, but not all, of a plurality of devices each uniquely coupled to one of the plurality of ports.
A system for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data from a plurality of ports into packets, comprising:
- a first interface to receive TDM data from the plurality of ports, the first interface including a state machine to write the TDM data from each port into a packet slot preassigned to the port,
- wherein the preassigned slots are maintained available for TDM data received from the corresponding port regardless of the presence of TDM data on the corresponding port;
- and
- a node controller moving TDM data, if necessary, from a packet slot preassigned to a source port to a packet slot preassigned to a destination port, wherein the node controller writes TDM data from each preassigned packet slot to a corresponding destination port.
A method for mapping time division multiplex (TDM) data from a plurality of ports into packets, comprising:
- receiving TDM data from the plurality of ports;
- writing TDM data received from each port into a packet slot preassigned to the corresponding port for receipt of TDM data;
- and
- reading TDM data from each of the packet slots, wherein each packet slot is preassigned to a corresponding port for transmission of TDM data, and
- wherein at least one packet slot is preassigned to a different port for receipt of TDM data than for transmission of TDM data.
