Abstract
This invention includes both a one-column process and a two-column process for the preparation of compositions enriched for anthocyanins from a crude plant extract. Both processes include a novel column purification step using a brominated polystyrene resin. This invention also includes extracts enriched for anthocyanins.
Claims24
A method of preparing a composition enriched for anthocyanins, comprising:
- a) extracting a plant material known to contain anthocyanins with an extraction solvent without adding bisulfite ions to form a crude extract comprising anthocyanins;
- b) filtering said crude extract;
- c) contacting said crude extract with a brominated polystyrene resin, wherein said resin adsorbs said anthocyanins;
- d) washing said resin;
- and
- e) eluting said anthocyanins from said brominated polystyrene resin to obtain a composition enriched for anthocyanins.
