A switching method is designed to operate with very high-speed wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) links, i.e., with multiple lambdas. The switching and data packet forwarding method combines the advantages of both synchronous and asynchronous data packet switching modes. In the synchronous switching mode, a time frame switching method based on predefined switching schedules that are responsive to a global common time reference, where the global common time reference is divided into a plurality of contiguous periodic super cycles, time cycles and time frames. The plurality of data packets contained in each of the time frames can be switched from any incoming WDM channel to any subset of outgoing WDM channels. The outcome of this switching method is called fractional lambda switching. For the asynchronous switching mode data packets that do not need guaranteed performance are separated from flows of data packets that require a deterministic service. The asynchronous data packets are routed according to header information and then combined back into the optical WDM channels.
A switch controller system for scheduling the transfer of data packets, wherein a Common Time Reference (CTR) is divided into contiguous periodic super cycles (SCs), each comprised of at least one contiguous periodic time cycle (TC), each comprised of at least one contiguous periodic time frame (TF), the system comprising:
A switch controller system, for switching a plurality of channels of data packets from an input port to selected ones of a plurality of channels for one of a plurality of output ports, wherein a Common Time Reference (CTR) is divided into a plurality of contiguous periodic super cycle (SCs) each comprised of at least one contiguous periodic time cycle (TC) each comprised of at least one contiguous periodic time frame (TE), wherein data transfer over each of the channels is arranged to occur in consecutive time frames (TFs), the system comprising:
A control system for scheduling the coupling of data packets from an input source to an output destination on a time scheduled basis, via a switch comprising a plurality of addressable input ports, each with an associated input port identifier, and a plurality of addressable output ports, each with an associated output port identifier, wherein there is a time identifier associated (a) with each input to the input port, (b) with each time for switching, and (c) with each output forwarding from the output port, the control system comprising:
A switching system for transferring data packets from an input port to one of a plurality of output ports, wherein the data packets are comprised of scheduled data packets and non-scheduled data packets (NSDPs), each comprising a header and a payload, wherein a Common Time Reference (CTR) is divided into contiguous periodic super cycles (SCs), each comprised of at least one contiguous periodic time cycle (TC), each comprised of at least one contiguous periodic time frame (TF), wherein the input port receives data packets over a plurality of incoming channels, wherein each channel (j) has a unique time reference (UTR-j) divided into super cycles, time cycles, and time frames, the system comprising:
A controller system for scheduling transfer of data packets during a defined one of a plurality of contiguous time frames, the system having a plurality of input ports and a plurality of output ports, and coupled to a switch matrix having a plurality of inputs and a plurality of outputs, the system comprising:
A method of controlling the switching of a plurality of data packets from an input port to a switching fabric input, each of the data packets comprised of a header and a payload and having an associated type of service comprising one of a scheduled and non-scheduled type of service,
